Beijing, Oct 7:
China is preparing to put forward a late candidate in the race to head the World Health Organization, according to sources cited by Reuters, potentially giving Beijing a greater role in one of the world’s key health institutions.
The move comes at a time when the United States has reduced its engagement with international organisations and is moving away from the WHO. China’s possible entry into the leadership contest could therefore intensify the geopolitical competition over the future direction of global health institutions.
China has long sought a larger role in United Nations agencies and other multilateral organisations. A successful bid would provide Beijing with another opportunity to expand its influence in international diplomacy and global health policy.
The leadership race is being closely watched as countries debate the future of international cooperation on pandemics, public health emergencies and global health financing.
