Chennai, Oct 8:
The Chennai Metropolitan Area is set for a major expansion, with the planned metropolitan region expected to cover 5,904 sq km.
The expansion is aimed at accommodating Chennai’s growing population and urban development while providing for planned infrastructure and transport facilities across the wider metropolitan region.
The expanded area is expected to bring several developing regions under a more coordinated urban planning framework. Proposals include wider roads, new beaches and planned urban growth as Chennai expands beyond its existing city limits.
The expansion is also expected to have implications for transportation, housing, infrastructure and civic services in the newly included areas.
The move is part of the State’s broader effort to plan Chennai’s future growth in a structured manner and improve connectivity between the core city and its rapidly developing suburban areas.
