Stockholm, Oct 9:
Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her distinctive and innovative body of work that draws on classical traditions while creating new forms of contemporary literature.
The Swedish Academy honoured Carson āfor her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literatureā. Her writing is known for moving across poetry, prose, essays, translation and drama, often bringing ancient Greek literature into conversation with modern ideas and experiences.
Carson, 76, was born in Toronto and has built an international reputation for her genre-defying approach to literature. Her notable works include *Autobiography of Red*, a verse novel that reimagines the Greek myth of Geryon, and *Eros the Bittersweet*, an exploration of desire through the works of ancient Greek poets. Her translations and adaptations of classical texts have also earned wide recognition.
Carsonās work frequently challenges conventional boundaries between literary forms. She has combined scholarly inquiry with creative experimentation, drawing on mythology, philosophy and the complexities of human relationships. Her writing has been praised for its intellectual depth, unusual structures and ability to connect ancient literary traditions with contemporary concerns.
The Nobel Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million. Carsonās selection places her among the most celebrated writers in world literature and recognises a career marked by originality and a willingness to challenge established literary conventions.
The announcement was made in Stockholm on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize was scheduled to be announced on Friday, while the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was due to be announced the following Monday.
