Actor and filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has announced a new charitable initiative, the Pattu Saree Scheme, through the Larencce Charitable Trust, marking 20 years of the organisation’s service. The initiative will begin with the distribution of 5,000 silk sarees to women who have not had the opportunity to own or wear one.
Lawrence announced the scheme on social media on Sunday, explaining that the idea emerged during one of his visits to support people in need. A woman had approached him with a letter requesting a silk saree of her own. The request prompted him to consider how many other women, particularly in rural areas, might similarly be unable to afford one.
The actor said the trust would launch the initiative on October 29, coinciding with his birthday, in Royapuram, where he spent a significant part of his childhood. He sought the blessings and support of the public for the programme, saying that bringing happiness to women through the initiative was the central objective.
Over the past two decades, the Larencce Charitable Trust has undertaken several welfare activities, including supporting children’s education, funding heart surgeries, helping people with disabilities and organising food distribution. The new scheme adds to the trust’s ongoing charitable work.
Lawrence is known for combining his career in cinema with public service initiatives. The Pattu Saree Scheme reflects his stated intention to extend support to women who may not otherwise be able to afford traditional silk clothing. Further details about the distribution process and beneficiaries are expected as the programme approaches its launch.
