Chennai,  Nov 2:
The second phase of the 2027 Census will begin on January 25 and continue until February 28, with the Centre announcing the schedule for population enumeration across most States and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu.
According to the notification issued by the Union Home Ministry, the self-enumeration facility will be available from January 10 to 24, enabling people to submit their household details online ahead of the door-to-door exercise. Population enumeration will take place from January 25 to February 28, followed by a review period from March 1 to 5.
The exercise was originally scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Centre has allocated Rs 12,000 crore for conducting the nationwide census in 2027.
The announced schedule covers Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, among other States. However, the exercise has been deferred in several States and regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, in view of upcoming Assembly elections and other considerations. A separate schedule will be announced for Manipur.
Self-enumeration will allow households to submit their details through an online portal during the 15-day window before the main exercise. The census is expected to provide updated population and household data after a gap of more than a decade.
