Chennai, Nov 2:
The sale of Diwali crackers at Island Grounds (Theevuthidal) in Chennai will begin on November 3 and continue until November 10, with 30 temporary shops being set up at the venue. Preparations are under way following the Madras High Court’s clearance for the shops, after the annual arrangements were delayed due to a court case.
The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has initiated the tender process, and construction of the temporary shops has been progressing. The Chennai Fireworks Traders Association expects the arrangements to be completed in time for the scheduled opening.
Cracker prices are likely to increase by 10 to 15 per cent this year, mainly due to reduced production, with several fireworks units in Sivakasi reportedly remaining closed. Traders have also indicated that supplies may be limited and fewer new varieties may be available. Buyers have been advised to avoid waiting until the last day, as popular varieties could sell out early.
