Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Chennai: Stressing on establishing a reservation system in the private sector of the country, PMK leader, Dr S Ramadoss, has rued the recent statement of Union Minister of Road Transport Nitin Gadkari.

In a release today, he said reservation system has to be enhanced for social justice.

“The statement made by Nitin Gadkari regarding the insignificance of the reservation system – as there are very fewer employment opportunities – is to be condemned. This leads us to revisit our policies to save social justice,” said Ramadoss.

Amid the ongoing demand for Maratha quota in jobs in Maharashtra, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said reservation will not guarantee employment as jobs are shrinking in the country.

Talking to reporters in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad district, Gadkari said, “Let us assume the reservation is given. But there are no jobs. Because in banks, the jobs have shrunk because of IT. Government recruitment is frozen. Where are the jobs?”

Rebutting this, Ramadoss pointed to the statistics presented by various Union ministers in Parliament last month.

“At least 24 lakh vacancies are still unfilled in the public sector. If all these posts are filled with people based on the reservation policy, that would ensure social justice,” the release said.

Further, Ramadoss said, “Ever since liberalisation policies were instituted in the country in 1991, employment opportunities in government organisations are shrinking. Apparently, there is a boom in the need for human resource in private entities.”

So, Ramadoss stressed the need for the government to incorporate the reservation system in private companies as well.

“The margin of employment in the private sector is four times greater than that of the public sector. But, most jobs are taken by people who are rich and influential. The disadvantaged group and weaker sections are struggling to make it to big private companies,” said Ramadoss.

The PMK leader said his party will take action after the formation of the National Backward Class Commission in the country.
