Chennai: Wednesday (3 October) was a day of big loss for the city. An incredible doctor, who found a place among the hearts of the people, especially among the residents of Mandaveli and RA Puram, Dr Jagan Mohan, passed away.

The compassionate doctor was known for charging just Rs 20 from his patients who came to his clinic at RK Mutt Road.

Charging such a meagre amount, that too in a time when price of petrol and other utilities have been sky-rocketing is beyond overwhelming.

The good doctor passed away 3 October at age 77. As soon as news of his unfortunate death was announced, WhatsApp was flooded with emotional messages about his heartwarming services to many. He was known to offer even free service to patients who were extremely poor.

A message in WhatsApp spoke about how he used to send his patients home with words of encouragement. Kenya, a PG student who regularly used to go to Dr Jagan’s clinic, says, “He is the best doctor I have ever come across. I have been going to his clinic for the past 16 years. As a patient and as a young child, I got inspired by his work.”

She adds that Dr Jagan initially used to charge just Rs 5 from his patients. Later, he charged Rs 10. At the time of his untimely death, he was charging just Rs 20.

The doctor is said to have completed his medical degree at Stanley Medical College.

“He is from Madurai and was a foodie,” recalls Kenya. “He always wanted to serve people and that’s why he started his own clinic. He could even prescribe medicines for neurological issues.”

The celebrated doctor is also said to be every much attached to his Maruti car. “Four years ago, his eyesight deteriorated a bit, yet he continued serving patients with help from his assistants,” says Kenya. “He often used to tell me that he wanted to change the medical world.” She adds that even the staff in his clinic are very helpful.
