With an aim to take part in Asian Games and bag a medal for the country, S Shruthi from Saligramam is all set to take part in the national-level athletics meet, representing Tamilnadu.

A class eight student, she recently became a national champion at an all- India event among CBSE schools.

Shruthi spoke on her athletic achievements when News Today caught up with her.

Q: Tell us about the CBSE tournament.
A: It is held for all CBSE schools across India called ‘Cluster’. In 2018, CBSE Cluster, held at Devangiri, had various events. In 100 metres and long jump, I came first and in relay race – second. We were the overall champions in the U-14 category.

Q: What are your other achievements?
A: There is a lot to say. In August this year, the Tamilnadu State junior meet was held. I was a gold medalist in 100 metres and a silver medalist in the long jump event. In October, the Tamilnadu State Open Meet was organised, in which I was a silver medalist in both 100 metres and long jump. In September, I represented Tamilnadu in the South Zone tournament in 100 metres and long jump and came up with a silver medal in both.

Q: So, you have been a consistent champion?
A: Yes, in short, in the last five consecutive years, I have secured medals in clusters, sprints and all other athletic meets held across the country.

Q: How do you feel about being a consistent champion?
A: I am very proud to say that I am the first girl to be officially representing national sportswomen from my school, PSBB. K K Nagar. This itself is a very exciting achievement for me.

Q: What role do your parents play?
A: They backed me when I participated in athletics at the age of eight. They gave me extra coaching privately at YMCA apart from my school training time. This went on for three years every day from 5 am to 8 am. It is because of their special care that all my achievements were possible.

Q: You must be planning to represent the country in international events?
A: My only vision is to participate and win a medal in Asian Games. Today, the entire nation and the government is focusing on promoting and encouraging sportswomen by all possible means. I think my dreams will come true soon if the focus remains.

Shruthi resides at Plot No. 50, Door No. 2, State Bank Colony, First Street, Saligramam. Ph: 99402 19333/ 63830 89973.
