Dr Asha Devi

In one of of the rarest achievements in the city for which Adambakkam residents can up their collars, a neighbourhood gynaecologist and obstetrician, Dr Asha Devi (33), has successfully passed part one, two and three examinations of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London, recently thereby becoming a member of the college’s international society.

This achievement has opened the opportunity for her to practise her specialisation in any part of the globe. She spoke to News Today about her journey so far.

Excerpts:
Q: What interested you to choose gynaecology and obstetrics as your career?
A: While there are many fields of study in medicine, many of them deal with treating a disease or dysfunction.

Among the crop of various studies, gynaecology and obstetrics are the only ones which deal with a natural process of life, child birth. They are the only ones that go in line with the cycle of life. So, this was the reason I chose the specialisation.

Q: Let us know about your journey so far.
A: Right from my childhood, I gave utmost importance to studies. I did my schooling at Rosary Matriculation School, Santhome, following which I pursued my MBBS at Vinayaka Missions College under Tamilnadu Dr M G R Medical University.

During my studies, I bagged three State-level gold medals each in Anatomy, Biochemistry and Microbiology becoming the best outgoing student of the college during the passout in 2008. Then, I did MS in gynaecology and obstetrics at Kasturba Medical College under Manipal University.

Similar to my performance in UG, I became the best outgoing student of the college during my passout in 2011. As of now, I am working as an associate consultant at Apollo Cradle for Women and Children, Karapakkam, while also running my own clinic at my residence in Adambakkam.

Q: Let’s know more about your achievements.
A: With an urge to move further up the ladder in my field, I started preparing for the examinations of Member of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) which when passed will make me a part of over 16,000 doctors worldwide.

I successfully passed part one in September 2014, part two in September 2016 and the final part three examination in December this year. In addition, I also won Dr M M Copper Merit Award in September 2005 and completed my Diploma in Reproductive Medicine and Embryology in April 2016 from International School of Medicine, Germany.

Q: What is the secret of your success?
A: I was able to reach this level only because of the support extended by my dad K Srinivasan (64), a retired Corporation Assistant Commissioner, mom S Malarvizhi (54), my husband Dr R Chandru (34), a laparoscopic surgeon at Sri Ramachandra Hospital, and brother S Vinod Kumar (32).

I studied with great ambition thereby becoming the first doctor in my family. My grandfather’s motivation was also another reason for my success.

Residents can congratulate Dr Asha Devi at 9841566757.
