Most of us have this assumption that every policeman is a tough guy, patrolling the streets with fierce eyes. But Assistant Commissioner of Police – Central Crime Branch, Selva Kumar, a resident of Vadapalani, evokes a different perspective.
He is not just a policeman but also serves as vice-principal of the Police Recruitment School, at St Thomas Mount.
Selva is responsible for moulding young students (in police parlance they are called ‘Recruit Police’) into well-disciplined and dedicated police officers. He is also involved with the City Police Welfare Department and counsels colleagues.
“I always wanted to get into social service. This dream drove me to study Sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University and the atmosphere there was very encouraging,” he told News Today.
In 1996, Selva joined the Police Department as inspector at Villupuram. “I was also one of the very few policemen to hold a doctorate at the time,” he smiles.
With hard work and dedication, Selva rose in the ranks and got promoted in 2005 to the Crime Branch division and later he became vice-principal of Police Recruitment School, St Thomas Mount.
“I focus on teaching students with practical knowledge. They are all very hard working and dedicated. I currently train about 220 recruit police, who come from different districts of Tamilnadu,” he said.
Selva said he offers career guidance in every possible way not only for aspiring policemen, but also other youngsters. “My approach is very simple and at the same time effective. I always tell my students to be more than just a policeman,” he said.
Asked about the tips he gives to students, the vice-principal said, “Always work hard and remember that there is no substitute for it.”
He further said, “Those who wish to enter the public sector should always be service-minded. It is also essential that interested candidates not just be mentally fit but also physically.” “People should see us not as intimidating men in uniform but as a friend,” the ACP said.
