Exhibition held to mark 60 yrs of Indo-German cooperation

Chennai: The successful partnership between Tamilnadu and Germany goes back to 1958 and Germany is playing major role in developmental plan of urban citizens, said State Finance Additional Secretary Pooja Kulkarini.

She was inaugurating a touring exhibition to mark the 60 years of successful Indo-German Development Cooperation at Geothe Institut here recently.

She also invited Germany to take part in skilling the Tamilnadu youth with their global expertise along with the other successful projects.

Deputy German Consulate General, Chennai, Michael Wegener was present at the exhibition jointly developed by the German development agencies Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and KfW Development Bank.

The exhibition showcased historical landmarks of Indo-German Development Cooperation, which began in 1958 with the establishment of IIT Madras, setting up the Foreman Training Institute in 1968 in Bengaluru, efforts to eradicate polio since 1996, support for the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana in 2008, setting up a 125-MW solar power plant in Sakri, Maharashtra and installation of solar panels on the rooftop of Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in 2015, a press release said.

In Tamilnadu, the Government of Germany is supporting the city of Coimbatore under the Government of India Smart Cities Initiative. In addition, there are ongoing projects with the stateon green energy corridors, urban mobility and land use planning, among others.

In Chennai city, a stretch of the Buckingham Canal is being developed from a climate resilience perspective. The Chennai-based National Biodiversity Authority and Tamilnadu State Biodiversity Board are involved with the Access and Benefit Sharing project, the release said.
