Giridharini with her coach Rajasekar.

In a matter of pride to the neighbourhood, R Giridharini, a class 12 student of Vidyodaya Girls Higher Secondary School in T Nagar, has bagged the gold medal in the 100 meters sprint event, conducted by the Federation of Indian Schools at Gujarat, recently.

The youngster who is a resident of Tilak Street, beat over 500 of her counterparts from schools across the country, to achieve her feat.

Speaking to News Today, she said, “I initially played basketball for a few years. Then when I was six, I got interested in track events. My school is a huge source of support to me,” and added, “My success story on the track was made possible, only because of my parents and coach Rajasekar who always stood by me.”

On whom does she consider her mentor in the game, Giridharini stated, “I admire Jessie Bolt for his temperament on field- whether it is the Olympics or a local event.”

“I improve myself in every competition, by following his style of functioning on the track,” she noted. With the National title in her kitty, what is next for Giridharini ?

“Since I am studying 12th, I would like to finish my exams with flying colours,” she smiled, and added, “After this, I will concentrate on stepping up my speed in 100 meters and aim to get selected for the National team to represent at international tournaments.”

It may be noted that she had also come first in the 100×4 meters relay at the Gujarat event. On her methods of practice, she said, “I wake up very early each morning and go to Nehru Park, Egmore, for practice sessions. Here, Rajasekar sir (coach) will advise me to implement few corrections on the run-up and also regarding diet procedures to improve my speed on the field.”

R Giridharini can be reached at 94440 79862.
