The 30th Road Safety Week was observed by the Vadapalani Traffic Police Department and awareness pamphlets were distributed to the public in Chennai.

The traffic police also gave free helmets to those driving without them and stressed on the importance of wearing them.

Speaking on the occasion, Swaminathan, Deputy Commissioner Traffic (South Zone), said Road Safety Week was launched by the National Safety Council of India (NSC) along with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways with a specific theme and the main aim is to create awareness among the public to follow rules. An Inspector attached to Vadapalani Police Station said the funds for the function were sponsored by Lions Club members.

A human chain was formed by students of SRM College advocating the necessity to wear helmets, avoid usage of cell phones and liquor while driving.

“The response this year was good, compared to last year. There was good cooperation from residents welfare associations, public and students,” said a traffic policeman.

Actors Samuthirakani, Aari, Soundara Pandia and Ravi Maria participated in the event.
