Construction of sub-registrar office is under way at Sembakkam.

Work on the construction of a new sub-registrar office in Sembakkam, Chennai, has commenced and is progressing at a rapid pace.

Though many people in and around the area are happy about the move, a few in Tambaram are worried that they have to travel a longer distance now.

“The present sub-registrar building on MES Road is easily accessible. Once the new facility at Sembakkam is inaugurated, we will have to travel a long distance,” said Prakash, a resident of Kadaperi.

At present, the Tambaram sub-registrar office functions on the first floor of a rented building on MES Road in West Tambaram, while the Selaiyur division functions on Bharatha Matha Street in East Tambaram.

Similarly, a few residents in Sembakkam are concerned that the sub-registrar office in the locality will lead to increase in traffic jam in the already congested stretch. Parking also might be a problem as it might affect those who visit the Maruthi Nagar Park. “Proper traffic arragments should be made before the facility is inaugurated,” said Ram kumar, a resident.

A resolution to construct a similar facility in Sembakkam was passed in 2013, at the Sembakkam Municipal Council meeting, following which a land measuring 13 cents, was allocated for the purpose.

Despite the area opposite the Maruthi Nagar Park being chosen, there was no progress in the work earlier due to various reasons.

However, in a breakthrough, the foundation stone, was recently laid by Commercial Taxes Minister K C Veeramani. Former Sembakkam Municipality Chairman, G M Shanthakumar under whom the resolution was passed, said the work is expected to be completed in eight months, at a cost of Rs 1.8 crore.

Despite the area opposite the Maruthi Nagar Park being chosen, there was no progress in the work earlier due to various reasons.
