Chennai: The Customs department at the Chennai international airport, seized nearly 1.17 kg of gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh from passengers in separate incidents.
The gold was being smuggled into the country by air passengers. Yesterday 313 gm of gold worth Rs 10.29 lakh was retrieved from a 23-year-old passenger who had hidden it in his rectum. He had arrived from Kuala Lumpur.
On 9 May, three cylindrical gold rods were found concealed in the rectums of two passengers who arrived from Kuala Lumpur. The gold weighed 618 gm and was worth Rs 20.30 lakh.
In a separate incident, two women passengers arriving from Colombo were intercepted on suspicion and were found to be carrying 238 gm valued at Rs 7.81 lakh in their rectum. They were both hailing from Tiruchirappalli. A total of 1.17 gm of gold worth Rs 38.4 lakh was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation was on.
