Cops to be deployed to monitor violators at ‘T’ junction

Chennai: Residents and motorists in the neighbourhood have a reason to be delighted as authorities have fixed a new traffic signal of the ‘T’ junction at Arcot Road and Kamaraj Salai.

According to Jayalakshmi, a long-time resident of Arcot Road, the intersection acts as a key route, for it enables motorists to reach important locations such as K K Nagar, Ramapuram, Saligramam, Chinmaya Nagar, Dasarathapuram and Alwarthirunagar.

Naturally, the junction is used extensively and connects Koyambedu and Poonamallee High Road with Kamaraj Salai and Kaliamman Koil Street. “The installation of the new signal at the junction is a welcome move and it has bought cheer to us residents,” says Jayalakshmi.

Another resident, Bhaskar, informed that a non-functional traffic signal at the intersection was removed. “But the signal wasn’t replaced. As a result, chaos flooded the area. The police were deployed to manage the traffic only during the morning and evening peak hours. At times, when the traffic police weren’t present to regulate vehicle flow, pedestrians found it difficult to walk there. But thanks to the new signal, pedestrians now find it easy to cross the junction,” he says.

However, some motorists insist that police be deployed at the intersection to check traffic violations.
A police official said steps to deploy traffic policemen at the junction during rush hour will be taken up shortly.
