Hyderabad: The city police yesterday apprehended a 25-year-old man for allegedly impersonating as a National Investigation Agency (NIA) official.
This is not the first time that the accused Guruvinod Kumar Reddy, hailing from Kadapa district, is being held for impersonation.
He had earlier come under the police scanner for allegedly posing as an IPS officer, an Air Force Flying Officer and an NIA Commandant on several occasions.
This time around he posed as an NIA official. The police officials retrieved a dummy pistol, a fake ID card of assistant commandant NIA, two fake rubber stamps of NIA, four binoculars and six mobile phones and a laptop were seized from him.
The man is said to be passionate about working in the police department from his school days and wanted to become an IPS officer. He completed his graduation in 2014 and shifted to Hyderabad in 2017 and joined a coaching centre and later took civil service coaching.
However, Reddy failed to get a job and was also unable to clear and pass any examinations such as UPSC, IFS among others. Due to pressure from his family, Reddy posed as a air force flying officer and created a fake ID card.
In 2016, he once again appeared for the civil service examinations but he failed. After that he lied to his family about clearing the exam and said he was selected as an IPS officer and prepared a fake ID card. The police arrested him in this connection.
In January this year, after getting released, Reddy tried to pass through the gates of College of Defence Management (CDM) at Secunderabad, by showing an ID card of the rank of Assistant Commandant of NIA. But he was handed over to police and arrested.
However, that didn’t deter him. He again joined a coaching centre and came into contact with a teaching staff, a retired Army Major and introduced himself as Additional Superintendent of Police of NIA. The retired major took him to some of the IPS officers who were in service and the accused took selfies by introducing himself as an IPS officer. He also called many police stations and introduced himself as IPS officer and instructed SHO/SIs to do his personal work.
Reddy stole one dummy pistol from the retired major’s house believing it to be original weapon and went absconding. Later when the ex-service man enquired about him at the NIA office, he found that he was a fake and filed a case against him. After this Reddy was again apprehended yesterday.
The accused told the police that he had used the fake ID cards of NIA at railway reservations, cinema halls, public parks, shopping malls, toll gates besides also visited temples after obtaining VIP darshans in many places of South India and cheating the innocent people around him. The accused used letterheads of NIA also to obtain information he required from Railways and other organisations, said a media report.
