Chennai: In a bid to turn T Nagar greener, students of Guntur Subbiah Girls Higher Secondary School, Bhagavantham Street, are undertaking an initiative of planting over 2,000 saplings at various locations in the area.

Speaking on this, Vennila, a class 11 student, says, “We noticed that several hundreds of trees were uprooted during the Vardah cyclone that hit the city a couple of years ago. Since then, many of us discussed the same, along with like-minded teachers and decided upon this idea.”

“To encourage us, our school management launched the ‘GSPT environment’ project that enabled us to grow saplings,” she adds.

For Jeevanya and Ilakkiya, students of class 12, the said initiative is close to their heart, and they are all set to plant various varieties of trees like vembu, vilvam, papaya, magizham, mandarai and pungai.

“Our headmistress Rajalakshmi has been a source of strength and has given us all the necessary support in maintaining the greenery that is present in the school’s premises, that includes almost 1500 saplings,” comments Ilakkiya.

“We will ensure that we water the plants before and after class hours,” she states. Meanwhile, few philanthropists too have come forward to support the students and have helped by providing the required materials for the project, sources say. Interestingly, Narayanan, an auto driver who stays nearby, too, is a part of the movement, and has offered seeds for the same.

“We are thankful and grateful to the management for coming forward to help the students realise their dreams of making the area green and cool,” notes Rajalakshmi.
