Chennai: 91-year-old V R Lakshminarayanan also known as VRL, a former Tamilnadu DGP, and who is famous for arresting late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a corruption case, passed yesterday.
According to media reports passed away at his house around 2 am yesterday, following brief illness. He is survived by a son and two daughters. The last rites would be performed on 25 June.
He belonged to the 1951 batch of IPS officer and began his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Madurai. He then went on to become the Joint Director of Central Bureau of Investigation. He retired in 1985 as a Director General of Police, Tamilnadu.
Throughout his career, Lakshminarayanan had worked under various Prime Ministers of India, notable among them are Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Charan Singh and Morarji Desai. He was popular for arresting Indira Gandhi in 1977 in a graft case.
Former Supreme Court Judge late V R Krishna Iyer was his brother. Speaking to a media agency, VRL’s daughter Rama Narayanan said, “Usually a public figure will not be able to devote time and energy for their family. They have to make a choice. But Appa (father) had a unique way of being a hero within his family as well as a stalwart in public service.”
