Chennai: “As far as atomic equipment are concerned, never in history have governments spoken the truth. They should at least do it now,” said Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan yesterday voicing his safety concern over the proposal of India’s first Away From Reactor (AFR) facility of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
The actor-politician said the term ‘away’ in the AFR was vague and wanted the government to define it. He further referred to the Fukushima disaster as an example.
He said those who opposed to the project have been at the receiving end of Centre’s arrogance to implement what they want. They are now fighting against waste, which he alleged, was dumped from the plant.
He further claimed no Research and Development on radioactive disasters have been done and that any technology without safety can be dangerous.
Kamal participated in garama sabhas of 72 villages through video conference and pitched for stronger gram sabhas and said such meetings should be held in all wards of cities. He said if all villages raised their voice in unison there are ways to get a good government. “This is a long time dream since the Gandhi era,” he added.
