Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday night announced that the mortal remains of legendary singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, who died early in the day, would be laid to rest with full police honours.

In a statement here, he said SPB has found a place in the hearts of the people not only in Tamilnadu, but also in India. “To add glory to his fame, the body of SPB will be laid to rest with full police honours”, he added.

Tens and hundreds of people of this teeming megapolis bade a tearful farewell, as the mortal remains of Balasubrahmanyam, who died Friday afternoon, was taken to his farm house at Tamaraipakkam near Redhills on the outskirts of the city, for last rites.

Earlier, soon after his death, the embalmed body of SPB, as he was affectionately called, was brought to his Nungambakkam residence from the hospital, where leaders of various parties, including Tamilnadu Minister D Jayakumar and DMK youth wing secretary and DMK president M K Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi, and members of the film fraternity and people from various walks of life paid their last respects.

A steady stream of mourners, braving slight rain, filed past the body of SPB and paid their homage.
