Chennai: When it comes to health infrastructure and delivery system, Chennai ranks sixth in a list of India’s eight prime cities, shows a latest report.

As part of its recent report titled ‘State of Healthcare in India: Indian cities through the lens of health’, Housing.com has assigned ratings to the country’s eight mega cities under its City Health Card list.

The list is topped by Pune, while Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai stand at second, third and fourth positions, respectively. Hyderabad, Kolkata and Delhi-NCR are ranked fifth, seventh and eighth in the list.

According to the report, Chennai has 3.0 beds per 1,000 people which is above the national average of 1.4 beds. However, the city poor overall ranking spot is attributed to its low ranking at parameters such as water supply, poor sanitation and solid waste management.

Overall, Chennai has 28,000-30,000 hospital bed for a population of 9.6 million, this number includes private and government hospital beds. The additional beds currently being augmented for pandemic have not been included in this, says the report.

A base for many prominent healthcare service providers and coupled with international connectivity, Chennai has become a desired place for medical tourism, says the report. Currently, most of the hospitals are located in the eastern suburbs of the city. However, southern and western suburbs with dynamic IT, commercial and residential activity still fall short of multispecialty and super specialty healthcare services.
