The internal rift within the Tamil Nadu BJP has deepened, with tensions escalating between current state president K Annamalai and his predecessor Tamilisai Soundararajan. The discord, which has been simmering for some time, erupted on Sunday following the party’s disappointing performance in the recent parliamentary elections, leading to a public exchange of accusations and social-media mudslinging between their supporters.The controversy was sparked by remarks from Tamilisai Soundararajan, now the Governor of Telangana, who blamed “anti-social elements” for being inducted into the party during Annamalai’s tenure. Responding to her comments, Tiruchi Suriyaa Siva, the state general secretary of the BJP OBC Morcha, defended Annamalai and countered Tamilisai Soundararajan’s allegations. Siva claimed that it was during the presidency of L Murugan, who was appointed on Soundararajan’s recommendation, that individuals with criminal backgrounds were brought into the party.
“It was during the presidency of L Murugan, who was appointed on your recommendation, that people with criminal backgrounds were inducted. I can produce a list of such names,” Siva asserted, leading to a flurry of accusations and defenses from both camps.
The fallout from the election loss has intensified the blame game within the party. Critics of Annamalai have held him responsible for the BJP’s poor showing in Tamil Nadu, accusing him of failing to galvanize the electorate. In contrast, Annamalai’s supporters have rallied to his defense, highlighting an increase in the BJP’s vote share and criticizing Soundararajan for airing internal party matters in public.
“The rise in BJP’s vote share under Annamalai’s leadership is a testament to his efforts,” said a supporter. “Tamilisai discussing party affairs in public only serves to weaken our unity at a critical time.”
