The Water Resources Department (WRD) of Tamil Nadu has initiated a pioneering project named the Tamil Nadu Satellite-Based Water Bodies Information, Monitoring, and Protection System (TN-SWIP), allocating a budget of Rs 3.55 crore. This innovative initiative integrates cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite imagery to oversee and safeguard the water bodies in Chennai.Part of the broader Tamil Nadu Water Resources Information and Management System, which entails an overall investment of Rs 30 crore, TN-SWIP aims to establish a comprehensive digital platform. This platform will consolidate data from various IT systems managed by the TN e-Governance Agency and the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing.
The primary objective of TN-SWIP is to enhance monitoring capabilities through AI-driven systems, enabling swift detection and alerting of authorities regarding encroachments. This proactive approach aims to facilitate prompt corrective actions to safeguard Chennai’s vital water resources.
Key components of TN-SWIP include the development of a user-friendly GIS-enabled web portal and mobile application. These tools will continuously monitor the health of water bodies and identify potential encroachments using real-time data and satellite imagery. Special emphasis will be placed on critical locations like Chembarambakkam Lake, where strategically placed sensors will enable real-time monitoring of water quality.
The implementation of TN-SWIP marks a significant step towards leveraging technology for effective water resource management and conservation in Tamil Nadu. By integrating AI and satellite technology, the initiative not only aims to protect water bodies but also to ensure sustainable use and management of water resources for future generations.
