The General Manager of Southern Railways (SR), R.N. Singh, has confirmed that the fourth terminal will be established at Perambur instead of Villivakkam, with a master plan currently in preparation.

During a press conference at the zonal headquarters on Wednesday, Singh discussed SR’s plans to develop two additional railway lines (Line 5 and Line 6) between Perambur and Ambattur to support the proposed terminal. A survey for this project has already been completed, and a feasibility study will follow. A detailed project report (DPR) is scheduled to be sent to the Railway Ministry in October.

It has been gathered that there is sufficient land available in Perambur, and the new terminal is expected to be completed by 2028.

Singh also provided updates on the Tambaram terminal redevelopment project. A DPR for this project will be submitted within the next 10 days. The project will be executed in a public-private partnership (PPP) mode, with developers constructing buildings on vacant plots. Approval from the ministry is anticipated by October. The bidding process, which involves extensive documentation, is expected to take about 8 months.

According to Singh, work on the Tambaram terminal redevelopment is slated to begin in June 2025 and will continue for three years.
These developments are part of Southern Railways’ ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and improve services for passengers in the region.
