Moscow, August 23: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Li Qiang met at the Kremlin on August 21, 2024, to celebrate the deepening of trade relations between Moscow and Beijing. The meeting underscores Russia’s increasing reliance on China for both political and economic support.
Putin praised the ongoing development of trade ties, highlighting the positive outcomes of the governments’ joint focus on enhancing economic connections. “Our trade relations are progressing successfully,” Putin remarked during the meeting. “The efforts from both sides are producing tangible results.”
Premier Li echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the exceptional state of Chinese-Russian relations and the significant economic and strategic plans the two nations are pursuing. “Chinese-Russian relations are at an unprecedentedly high level,” Li stated.
The discussion took place against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing struggle with a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region, which has been ongoing for three weeks. Additionally, Moscow recently experienced one of its largest drone attack waves since the onset of the Ukraine conflict.
While the specifics of the discussions between Putin and Li on Ukraine remain undisclosed, China’s position on the conflict has been one of neutrality. Nonetheless, both countries share a strong animosity toward Western nations. Following Western sanctions on Russian oil in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China significantly increased its purchases of Russian oil, thereby amplifying its influence in Russia.
A recent U.S. intelligence report has revealed that China has substantially boosted its sales of machine tools, microelectronics, and other technologies critical for Russia’s military production, including missiles and tanks. This move highlights China’s pivotal role in supporting Russia’s defense capabilities.
This meeting between Putin and Li reflects the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations, with significant implications for their future economic and political collaboration.
