Madurai AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) Director Hanumanth Rao announced that the first phase of construction for the medical college and hospital will be completed within 18 months as planned. The AIIMS facility is being built on a 221-acre site in Thoppur, Madurai.The tender process for the construction was initiated on August 17, 2023, with L&T (Larsen & Toubro) securing the contract. On May 10, 2024, the Environmental Expert Assessment Committee recommended the grant of environmental clearance, which was officially provided by the Tamil Nadu government on May 20, 2024.
Following this, L&T began the construction work with an estimated total project cost of ₹2,021 crores. The first phase will focus on the development of key facilities, including the medical college, emergency care unit, wards for inpatients and outpatients, and hostels for students. The goal is to complete these initial infrastructures within 18 months.
This project aims to bring state-of-the-art healthcare and medical education to the region, providing critical services to the people of Tamil Nadu.
