The onset of significant rainfall in Chennai has brought with it a seasonal surge in fever and cold cases, sparking concerns among health professionals and residents alike. The damp weather, while providing relief from the heat, has created conditions that are conducive to the spread of viral infections.
Healthcare centers across Chennai have reported an increase in patients suffering from fever, colds, and related ailments. The fluctuation in temperatures and the higher humidity levels during and after rainfall contribute to the spread of these seasonal illnesses. Doctors have urged the public to take precautions to avoid getting sick during this period.
Dr. R. Murugan, a general physician at a city hospital, emphasized, “The shift in weather patterns makes it easier for viruses to spread, especially when immunity is low. It’s essential for people to maintain hygiene and boost their immunity through proper nutrition and hydration.”
Maintain Personal Hygiene: Washing hands frequently with soap and water helps minimize the spread of viruses. Carrying a hand sanitizer for times when water is not available is advisable.
Stay Warm and Dry: Wearing waterproof jackets, raincoats, and using umbrellas can help you stay dry when outside. Damp clothes can lower body temperature and increase susceptibility to colds.
Avoid Getting Wet: If you do get caught in the rain, change into dry clothing as soon as possible and keep your feet dry to prevent infections.
Consume Immune-Boosting Foods: Include fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and guavas, in your diet. Ginger tea, turmeric milk, and herbal soups can also help strengthen your immune system.
Stay Hydrated: Even in cooler weather, staying hydrated helps your body function optimally and fight off infections.
Limit Outdoor Activities: Minimize your time outside, especially if it’s raining heavily. This helps reduce the risk of exposure to cold air and pollutants that might exacerbate respiratory issues.
Keep Surroundings Clean: Ensure your living space is free from standing water, which can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects.
Seeking medical attention early is crucial if symptoms persist or worsen. Fever and colds can escalate into more severe respiratory problems if left unchecked. Dr. Murugan added, “Prompt medical attention is vital, especially for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Early intervention can prevent complications.”
The rains in Chennai bring with them both relief and challenges. While they offer much-needed respite from the heat, the accompanying rise in illnesses means residents must be vigilant. By adopting simple yet effective safety measures, the community can enjoy the rainy season while keeping health risks at bay.
As Dr. Murugan puts it, “A little caution goes a long way in staying healthy during times of changing weather.”
