Train travel between Bengaluru and Chennai is set to become significantly faster as speeds on the route have been increased to 130 km/h. The upgrade is expected to reduce travel times for key services like the Vande Bharat Express and Shatabdi Express. The Vande Bharat Express will save approximately 25 minutes on its journey, while the Shatabdi Express will cut at least 20 minutes. The reduction is a result of high-speed trials conducted by the South Western Railway (SWR) on the Bengaluru-Jolarpettai section, which saw the speed limit raised from 110 km/h to 130 km/h.
This improvement enables faster train operations across the entire 360-km Bengaluru-Chennai corridor, benefitting passengers on two Vande Bharat and two Shatabdi Express services daily. The enhanced connectivity is expected to boost economic activities along this high-density corridor.
SWR officials have stated that future upgrades to support speeds beyond 130 km/h will require extensive infrastructure work, including bridge strengthening, fencing, removal of level crossings, and track realignment. These developments reflect ongoing efforts to modernize rail travel in one of the busiest routes in Southern India.
