The Tamil Nadu Transport Department has issued guidelines for drivers and conductors regarding free travel for on-duty police personnel in government buses.
This initiative follows an incident in May, where a video of an argument between a bus conductor and a police officer over free travel went viral. In response, measures have been taken to streamline the process and provide clarity.
Police personnel can travel for free within their district of duty on non-air-conditioned (non-AC) city and suburban buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation.
Police personnel will be issued a free travel pass, valid within the district of their duty and for a specified duration.
The pass must be presented to avail of the free travel.
If a police officer fails to present the travel pass, they may be subject to a fine.
Misuse of the travel pass will result in confiscation and further action.
Inter-District Travel:
For travel between districts, police personnel must present a valid āwarrantā for free travel.
The guidelines aim to prevent confusion and ensure smooth coordination between police personnel and the transport department while maintaining accountability in the use of free travel benefits
