The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to create 13 new municipalities, including those in Kanyakumari, Arur, and Perundurai, as part of a significant urban restructuring initiative.
The government has proposed to merge several town panchayats, municipalities, and village panchayats to enhance urban governance and improve basic infrastructure for citizens. This includes:
Merging 4 municipalities, 5 town panchayats, and 149 village panchayats with major municipal corporations like Chennai, Madurai, and Tiruchirappalli.
Integrating 147 village panchayats and one town panchayat with 41 existing municipalities, including Thiruvarur, Thiruvallur, and Chidambaram.
Establishing 13 new municipalities in areas like Kanyakumari, Arur, and Perundurai by reorganizing village panchayats and town panchayats.
Creating 25 new town panchayats, including those in Yercaud, Kalaiyarkovil, and Thirumayam, by merging 29 village panchayats or forming them as standalone entities.
Strategic Urban Development
The government aims to ensure better spatial planning and efficient implementation of urban development projects. By consolidating contiguous areas, the plan seeks to optimize financial resources, enhance infrastructure, and address the challenges of urbanization effectively.
The restructuring will also focus on coordinated development, improving administrative efficiency, and ensuring sustainable urban growth. The government has issued five government orders under the direction of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to implement these changes.
Enhancing Urban Infrastructure
This initiative aims to provide citizens with high-quality infrastructure and basic amenities by streamlining urban governance. The government intends to tackle urban challenges through systematic urbanization and balanced growth, ensuring effective administration and resource utilization.
The official government orders detailing these changes are available on the Tamil Nadu government’s website. This move underscores the state’s commitment to fostering well-planned urban development and addressing the needs of its growing urban population.
