Chennai: Inspector Jeganathan of Pattabiram Police Station in Chennai has been suspended for negligence in curbing rowdy activities in his jurisdiction, following a double murder incident.Police inspectors are tasked with monitoring rowdies within their jurisdiction, tracking their activities, and ensuring action against those on bail or with warrants issued against them. They are also expected to keep a close watch on rival gangs and prevent potential clashes. However, Inspector Jeganathan reportedly failed to take proactive measures, leading to the fatal clash between two groups of rowdies near Avadi.
The victims, Rettaimalai Srinivasan (27) and his brother Stalin (24), both known rowdies with over 10 criminal cases, were residents of Bajana Koil Street, Ayilcheri, Pattabiram.
On the evening of the incident, Srinivasan and Stalin, reportedly intoxicated, caused disturbances near their home, leading to a confrontation with a rival gang. Though the gang initially retreated due to a lack of weapons, they returned armed later that night.
The gang attacked Stalin near his house and chased down Srinivasan in the Manthop area of Dhanalakshmi Nagar, Pattabiram, brutally killing both before fleeing the scene.
Police Commissioner Shankar suspended Inspector Jeganathan, holding him responsible for the lapse in preventive measures that could have avoided the murders.
In the wake of the incident, Thiruverkadu Law and Order Inspector Vijay Krishnaraj has been transferred to Pattabiram Police Station. Meanwhile, Inspector Rajakumar from the Cholavaram Police Station has been reassigned to Thiruverkadu. Commissioner Shankar issued the orders for these transfers.
This incident highlights the need for stricter monitoring and timely action to prevent crimes stemming from rowdyism in Chennai.
