Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers associated with app-based aggregators Uber and Ola will go on strike from February 1, demanding an end to commission-based earnings and the implementation of daily subscription charges instead. They are also seeking compensation for drivers killed in accidents during work. However, drivers linked to platforms like Namma Yatri and Taxina will continue operations as usual.
The strike coincides with the auto-rickshaw union’s announcement of revised fares, effective February 1, with a minimum charge of Rs 50 for the first 1.8 km and Rs 18 per subsequent km. Waiting charges will be Rs 1.50 per minute after five minutes, with a 50% night surcharge from 11 pm to 5 am.
Drivers allege that Uber and Ola take up to 25% commission per ride, significantly reducing their earnings. In contrast, platforms like Namma Yatri and Taxina charge a fixed daily subscription fee, allowing drivers to retain full fare amounts.
