The recent military strikes between Iran and the United States have escalated tensions in West Asia, posing serious concerns for global stability. Iran’s missile attack on the US airbase in Qatar, in retaliation for the US bombing of its nuclear sites, has triggered fears of a wider conflict. With both sides refusing to back down, the region could inch closer to a full-scale war—disrupting peace, trade, and oil routes that are vital to many countries, including India.
For India, the biggest immediate concern is energy security. Over 60% of India’s oil imports come from West Asia, and any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz—through which a third of the world’s oil passes—could spike fuel prices, worsen inflation, and hurt the economy. Additionally, millions of Indian workers live and work in Gulf countries; their safety and remittances are critical for India’s economy. Any war in the region could put them at risk and trigger an emergency evacuation.
Strategically, India will have to walk a diplomatic tightrope. While it has strong ties with the US, India also shares a historic relationship with Iran, especially in areas like energy and the Chabahar port. Taking sides openly could complicate India’s foreign policy and regional goals. New Delhi must now push for restraint and dialogue, using its global standing to urge all sides to de-escalate and return to diplomacy. Peace in West Asia is not just a regional need—it is a global necessity.
