In a dramatic geopolitical move, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire following days of escalating hostilities. His intervention — described by some as unorthodox but effective — reportedly involved direct talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and backchannel diplomacy through Gulf intermediaries. Trump’s announcement caught much of the world off guard, underscoring both his enduring influence and the urgency of defusing a rapidly deteriorating conflict that had begun to draw global concern.
Iran’s response, however, was measured and skeptical. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi publicly denied that any formal agreement had been signed, reiterating that Iran would only observe a ceasefire if Israel halted its aggression first. Tehran emphasized that any sustainable peace would depend on mutual respect, not unilateral declarations or face-saving announcements. While Iranian missile strikes seemed to slow, the leadership remained wary of Trump’s motives and doubted the longevity of a ceasefire not brokered through traditional diplomatic channels.
Israel, meanwhile, initially welcomed the truce but accused Iran of violating it almost immediately. Netanyahu’s government, under both domestic and international pressure, agreed to pause further strikes but remained vigilant. The fragile ceasefire has provided momentary relief, but its success hinges on broader strategic shifts and trust-building — a tall order given the deep-rooted animosity between the two nations. Trump’s intervention may have bought time, but whether it paves the way for lasting peace or merely delays a new round of violence remains to be seen.
