In a major move towards promoting eco-friendly public transport, the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has officially launched the first phase of electric bus services in the city. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin flagged off the fleet today, marking a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s push for sustainable urban mobility.
A total of 120 electric buses will operate from the Vyasarpadi depot in the initial phase. These zero-emission buses are part of the state government’s broader initiative to modernize public transport while reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
The electric buses have been strategically allocated across 11 circular routes, enhancing connectivity between key locations in and around Chennai.
Here is the route-wise allocation of the new e-buses:
Route No. 2B (K. Kannadasan Nagar – M.K.P. Nagar – Central – Government Estate – Central – Vyasarpadi – Kannadasan Nagar): 10 buses
Route No. 18A (Broadway – Glamappakkam): 10 buses
Route No. C33 (Kannadasan Nagar – Vyasarapadi – Broadway – Central – Soolai – Perambur Market – Kannadasan Nagar): 5 buses
Route No. C64 (K. Kannadasan Nagar – Perambur Market – Central – Broadway – Vyasarapadi – Kannadasan Nagar): 5 buses
Route No. 37 (Poonamallee – Vallalar Nagar): 10 buses
Route No. 46G (M.K.P. Nagar – Koyambedu): 10 buses
Route No. 57 (Vallalar Nagar – Chengunram): 10 buses
Route No. 57X (Vallalar Nagar – Periyapalayam): 10 buses
Route No. 164E (Manali – Perambur): 10 buses
Route No. 170TX (MKB Nagar – Glamappakkam): 20 buses
Route No. 170C (TVK Nagar – Guindy (TVK Estate)): 10 buses
These electric buses are expected to improve travel comfort, reduce pollution, and modernize the overall commuting experience for the public. With smooth and quiet operation, they also aim to ease traffic-related stress and promote a cleaner environment for Chennai residents.
MTC plans to continue expanding the electric fleet in future phases, gradually replacing older diesel vehicles and transforming the city’s transport network into a more sustainable system.
