The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) have announced temporary traffic diversions in the city in view of the upcoming Independence Day 2025 rehearsals. The main Independence Day celebration is scheduled to be held on August 15, 2025, at Fort St. George, Chennai. In preparation, certain roads will be closed to traffic during rehearsal days to ensure smooth and secure proceedings.
Key roads that will remain closed include Kamarajar Salai โ€” from the Labour Statue to the War Memorial, Rajaji Salai โ€” from the War Memorial to the Reserve Bank Subway, and the entire stretch of Flag Post Road (Kodimaram Salai). These closures are expected to affect traffic flow in and around the Fort area.
To manage the situation, GCTP has announced alternate routes. Vehicles coming via Kamarajar Salai and heading towards Parimunai can take Labour Statue – Walajah Road – Anna Salai – Munroe Statue – Muthusamy Bridge – Muthusamy Road – Raja Annamalai Mandram Junction – NFS Road – Parimunai. Similarly, vehicles from Anna Salai heading towards Paris Corner can use the Muthusamy Bridge – Muthusamy Road – Raja Annamalai Mandram – NFS Road – Paris Corner route. Those needing to reach Kamarajar Salai from Rajaji Salai via the Secretariat can follow Paris Corner – NFS Road – Raja Annamalai Mandram – Muthusamy Road – Muthusamy Bridge – Anna Salai – Munroe Statue – Walajah Road – Kamarajar Salai.
Motorists are requested to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with the police to ensure safety and avoid inconvenience during the rehearsal days.
