Key office-bearers of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), including Bussy Anand and Adhav Arjuna, appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday as part of the ongoing probe into the tragic Karur crowd crush incident that claimed 41 lives in September.
The leaders responded to summons and attended questioning at the CBI office in Delhi, according to reports from the Tamil daily Maalaimalar. Alongside Anand and Arjuna, other party officials such as TVK’s Deputy General Secretary C.T.R. Nirmal and the Karur District Secretary were also present before the investigators.
The appearance of senior TVK leaders comes amid a detailed and expanding investigation into the crowd crush that occurred during a political rally held by the party on September 27 at Velusamypuram in Karur district. The tragedy occurred when an unexpectedly large crowd surged toward the stage during the event, leading to fatal overcrowding.
The Supreme Court of India had earlier ordered a CBI investigation into the incident and set up a three-member monitoring committee led by retired Justice Ajay Rastogi to oversee the probe, underscoring the need for an impartial central inquiry.
In recent weeks, the CBI has stepped up questioning of organisers, party functionaries and other stakeholders to understand crowd management arrangements, permission procedures, and compliance with safety norms. Earlier questioning included senior TVK functionaries, and the agency has summoned more than 300 individuals for detailed statements as part of the investigation.
