Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay arrived in New Delhi on Monday to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Karur stampede case, a tragedy that killed 41 people during a TVK political rally on September 27, 2025.
Vijay was summoned by the CBI under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and was cited as a witness in the ongoing investigation.
After departing Chennai early in the morning on a chartered flight, he reached the CBI headquarters, where questioning began around 11 a.m.
Party sources said TVK requested security cover from the Delhi Police for the actor‑politician, given the sensitive nature of the case and the high media attention it has drawn.
The CBI probe into the Karur incident was ordered by the Supreme Court and taken over from a Special Investigation Team.
Investigators have already recorded testimony from several TVK leaders, district officials, and police officers, and have inspected key evidence, including Vijay’s campaign vehicle, as part of efforts to reconstruct the events leading up to the stampede.
Authorities are expected to question Vijay on rally planning, crowd management, safety arrangements, permissions obtained, and whether organisational or administrative lapses contributed to the tragedy.
The outcome of his deposition may influence the next phase of the case, including any decision on a charge sheet.
TVK officials have stated that Vijay is cooperating fully with the investigation; legal counsel was consulted before deciding to comply with the summons, with the party emphasising that seeking relief through courts would be considered if necessary during the proceedings.
