Producers of Jana Nayagan Move Supreme Court Against HC Stay on CBFC Certification
The producers of Vijay’s highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan have approached the Supreme Court of India challenging the Madras High Court’s interim stay on the film’s certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The petition was filed after the High Court reversed an earlier order directing the CBFC to grant a U/A 16+ certificate, putting the film’s planned Pongal release in jeopardy.
The dispute began when Jana Nayagan was submitted to the CBFC in December 2025 and the examining committee recommended a U/A certificate after suggested changes were made.
However, just days before the scheduled January 9 release, the CBFC referred the film to a revising committee following a complaint — a move the makers said was unexpected and procedurally unfair.
The producers then approached the Madras High Court, where a single judge ordered the CBFC to grant clearance, but this was soon stayed by a division bench.
In their Supreme Court plea, KVN Productions LLP has sought an urgent hearing, arguing that the stay on certification is causing “irreparable loss” and undermining the film’s release schedule. The petition comes amid rising fan disappointment and industry concern, as Jana Nayagan is widely anticipated to be Vijay’s final film before focusing on politics.
A further hearing in the High Court’s appeal is scheduled for later in January, but the team is pushing for expedited Supreme Court consideration to clear the certification hurdle and restore the film’s release trajectory.
