As Pongal approaches across Tamil Nadu, the festival of harvest reveals not just boiling pots of sweet rice and thalai deepam lit at dawn — it also showcases how Generation Z (born roughly between 1997 and 2012) is reinterpreting and reinvigorating age-old traditions.
For many young Tamils, Pongal remains a cherished cultural anchor, but they are blending traditional customs with contemporary expressions.
“I look forward to Pongal with family, making sakkarai pongal and decorating the kolam at home,” says 19-year-old college student Ananya R. from Madurai. “But we also share reels of our festivities and recipes with friends online — it helps keep our culture alive in the digital space.”
For Ananya, the festival is both a moment of heritage and an opportunity to connect with her generation across platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Similarly, Arjun S. (22), a software engineer in Chennai, says Pongal is a time to slow down, even in a fast-paced life. “Pongal reminds me of togetherness and gratitude — for family, food and our roots. My friends and I plan a small drive to see the jallikattu at Alanganallur every year,” he says. “We enjoy the tradition, but we also talk about animal welfare and safety in the sport — it’s important to be respectful of both culture and compassion.”
For some, the festival is a chance to reinterpret symbols. “I love the ritual of boiling the first rice,” says 20-year-old arts student Meena V. from Coimbatore. “But I also make a point of celebrating farmers’ contribution to food security. In college, we organise small awareness sessions about sustainable farming alongside traditional Pongal events.”
Despite their modern outlook, Gen Z respondents overwhelmingly value family engagement and cultural continuity. “We listen to Pongal songs, share memes, but we also help our parents prepare the pongal pot,” laughs Kartik S. (21) from Tiruchy. “It’s funny, we’re digital, but we still pause for theru walk, neighbor meetups and vintage vegetable markets during Pongal.”
Experts say this generational trend reflects a hybrid identity — rooted in heritage yet expressed through present-day tools and values. Cultural sociologist Dr. Lakshmi Narayan notes, “Gen Z in Tamil Nadu is not rejecting tradition; they are reframing it. They embrace community values while applying their own ethical and social sensibilities.”
As Pongal week unfolds, this blend of devotion, dialogue and digital celebration shows that the ancient festival continues to thrive — not as a static ritual, but as a living tradition for Tamil Nadu’s youth.
