Greater Chennai Corporation mandates permits for temporary flagpoles in Chennai to ensure public safety during events. A new standard operating procedure outlines strict guidelines for installation.Individuals, political parties, and organizations must submit applications at least seven days in advance via the GCC website, including details on location, number, height, and type of flagpoles. Poles are limited to 3.5 meters above ground, cannot be installed on roads, footpaths, drains, bridges, or medians, and must maintain a safe distance from road edges. Temporary permits last up to three days for non-religious events or seven days for religious functions, with a ₹10 fee per pole approved via SMS by a zonal sub-committee.
GCC authorities warn that unauthorized flagpoles will be removed immediately, with legal action against violators who cause accidents, property damage, or traffic disruptions. Organizers bear full responsibility and must restore sites post-event. This aligns with state government guidelines from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.
The rules target public meetings, election campaigns, conferences, rallies, processions, dharnas, and festivals amid rising urban safety concerns in Chennai.
Similar SOPs were issued in late 2025, now reinforced for 2026 events.
