Why Annamalai Stepped Down from Election Duties: Political Frustration Beyond Family Reasons

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai recently resigned as the party’s election in-charge for six assembly constituencies ahead of the upcoming state elections. Officially, Annamalai cited his father’s deteriorating health and the need to remain in Coimbatore for family responsibilities as the reason for withdrawing from active poll duties. He told reporters he would be unable to travel extensively and therefore requested that party leadership reassign his responsibilities.
However, political analysts and party insiders point to deeper frustrations behind the move. Behind the public explanation, Annamalai is believed to have felt marginalised within the BJP hierarchy — particularly after being given responsibility for only six geographically scattered constituencies rather than a broader statewide campaign role. Many see this as a sign that he has not been fully entrusted with the party’s electoral strategy.
Annamalai’s discomfort also stems from internal alliance dynamics. After a period of strained relations between the BJP and the AIADMK, the two parties revived their electoral cooperation. Annamalai had previously clashed with AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, accusing him of opportunistic politics in the past — comments that helped sour the earlier alliance. Now, analysts say, Annamalai may feel uneasy campaigning under an alliance with a party and leader he once criticised so sharply.
Observers note that a leader who once publicly confronted EPS and Dravidian rivals might now experience “psychological disdain” serving in a coalition with them, especially when his own role appears restricted. The irony of campaigning for partners he once opposed could contribute to his decision to step aside, even while maintaining loyalty to the BJP’s broader goals.
Political analysts also suggest that Annamalai’s reduced visibility after stepping down as state BJP chief and being excluded from key strategic discussions may have fed his frustration. For a leader who had sought to expand BJP’s footprint in Tamil Nadu, being confined to limited responsibilities — and perceived as sidelined in crucial alliance talks — could contribute to his decision to withdraw.
Despite these undercurrents, Annamalai insists that his decision is personal and that he remains committed to campaigning for the party in whatever role the leadership assigns him. Whether he later contests a seat himself is expected to be decided after consultation with BJP leadership.
