The State government has announced that the new 1.3-kilometre elevated flyover constructed in Madurai will be named “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Flyover,” a tribute to the Indian freedom fighter’s legacy. The announcement was made by M. K. Stalin on social media, highlighting the significance of naming the structure after Netaji as a mark of respect for his role in India’s struggle for independence. The bridge, built at an estimated cost of Rs 213 crore, stretches from Thamukkam Maidanam to Nelpettai Anna Statue in the heart of the city.
In his statement, Stalin said the Dravidian model of development has been marked by landmark infrastructure projects, and the forthcoming flyover — scheduled to be inaugurated on February 21 during his visit to Madurai — reflects that vision. He emphasised that naming the flyover after Netaji honours the leader who inspired many with his commitment to India’s liberation.
The project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion along one of Madurai’s busiest corridors, improving connectivity and reducing travel time for commuters. Work on the flyover has reached its final stages ahead of the planned inauguration later this month.
The naming has been welcomed by local leaders and residents, who view it as both a tribute to a national icon and a boost to civic pride in the historic city.
