Chennai, May 18:
A major expansion project by Chennai Metro Rail Limited is set to significantly transform urban mobility in Chennai, with plans to connect the Chennai International Airport to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus in just 20 minutes.
The proposed corridor will pass through key suburban hubs such as Pallavaram, Tambaram, and Vandalur, providing seamless connectivity between the city’s airport and one of its largest intercity bus terminals.
The project is expected to ease long-standing traffic congestion on arterial roads leading to southern districts, particularly benefiting daily commuters who currently rely on multiple modes of transport to reach Kilambakkam. By offering a fast and reliable alternative, the metro link aims to reduce dependency on private vehicles and road-based transport.
Officials believe the new line will not only cut travel time drastically but also improve access to the Kilambakkam terminus, which has faced criticism over connectivity challenges since its inauguration. Enhanced metro access is expected to address these concerns and strengthen Chennai’s integrated public transport network.
Once completed, the corridor is likely to play a crucial role in reshaping commuting patterns, promoting sustainable urban transport, and supporting the city’s long-term infrastructure growth.
