Chennai, May 18:
The long-awaited opening of the Adambakkam MRTS station has been delayed once again, disappointing commuters as officials from Southern Railway indicated that passenger services are unlikely to begin anytime soon.
Although the Chennai MRTS extension between Velachery and St Thomas Mount was officially commissioned in March 2026, trains continue to pass through Adambakkam station without halting. Railway authorities have cited ongoing technical rectification work and pending internal approvals as key reasons for the delay.
A major concern involves the wide gap between train coaches and the platform, caused by the curved track alignment near the station. Engineers are currently assessing possible solutions, including extending the platform and making track corrections to ensure passenger safety.
At present, around 86 MRTS services operate daily between Chennai Beach and St Thomas Mount, but Adambakkam remains the only station on the extended stretch yet to become operational.
The delay has sparked frustration among residents and daily commuters, especially as the nearby Puzhuthivakkam MRTS station is already functional. Many have pointed out that despite most construction work being completed, the station remains closed.
The Velachery–St Thomas Mount extension, first proposed in 2008, took nearly 18 years to materialise due to land acquisition issues and construction challenges. The continued delay in opening Adambakkam station has now added to commuter concerns over last-mile connectivity and infrastructure planning in the city.
