Chennai,  May 19:.

In a significant early move after assuming office, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered a comprehensive overhaul of Amma Canteens across the state. The directive was issued during a high-level review meeting in Chennai, where the Chief Minister stressed the need to upgrade both infrastructure and service standards at these subsidised eateries.
Highlighting concerns over declining food quality, Vijay directed officials to ensure that meals served are not only affordable but also hygienic, nutritious, and consistent in taste. He called for improvements in kitchen facilities, better maintenance of dining spaces, and the procurement of modern cooking equipment and utensils. Officials have also been asked to streamline supply chains and monitor food preparation processes more closely to maintain uniform standards across all outlets.
The revamp is expected to include renovation of ageing canteen buildings, improved seating arrangements, enhanced cleanliness, and better working conditions for staff. The Chief Minister also emphasised the importance of regular inspections and feedback mechanisms to address public grievances swiftly. There are indications that the government may explore expanding the network in underserved urban and semi-urban areas to widen access for economically weaker sections.
Amma Canteens, launched in 2013 under former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, have long been a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s welfare model, offering meals at highly subsidised rates to lakhs of people ежедневно. By prioritising their revival and modernisation, the Vijay-led government appears keen to reinforce its commitment to social welfare while improving the efficiency and public perception of the scheme.
