Chennai, May 22:
Amid soaring temperatures across the State, parents and teachers’ associations have urged the Directorate of School Education to reconsider the scheduled reopening of schools on June 1. The demand comes as Tamil Nadu continues to experience intense summer heat, particularly in Chennai and several interior districts.
Students from Classes 1 to 12 are currently on summer vacation following the completion of final examinations in April. However, with the mercury remaining consistently high, concerns are mounting over the health and safety of children who would be required to commute and attend classes under extreme weather conditions.
Members of teachers’ associations have called for an extension of the summer holidays, stressing the need for a cautious approach. They have urged the School Education Department and Minister A. Rajmohan to hold detailed consultations before taking a final decision on reopening.
Parents have echoed similar concerns, emphasising that student well-being must be prioritised. Many have suggested that schools should reopen only after weather conditions improve, as prolonged exposure to heat could pose serious health risks.
While no official announcement has been made yet, the growing demand has triggered speculation that the State government may review the reopening schedule in the coming days.
