Chennai, May 27:
Doctors in Chennai have reported a recent increase in mild COVID-19 cases, with hospitals witnessing a noticeable uptick in patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. While most infections remain mild and manageable at home, health experts have advised caution, particularly for vulnerable groups.
According to medical professionals, the surge has been observed over the past couple of weeks, with more patients reporting symptoms such as low-grade fever, sore throat, cough, and fatigue. Many of these cases are being treated on an outpatient basis, and there has been no significant rise in hospital admissions or severe illness so far.
Doctors noted that earlier cases of fever were largely attributed to influenza, but recent trends indicate that COVID-19 is now accounting for a growing share of infections. Despite the increase, officials have stressed that there is no cause for panic, as the current infections are largely mild in nature.
Health experts believe the rise could be linked to emerging Omicron subvariants, which are known to spread quickly but typically cause less severe disease. Symptoms often resemble common cold or seasonal viral infections, making it important for people to get tested if symptoms persist.
Authorities have advised the public to follow basic precautions such as wearing masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, maintaining hand hygiene, and avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals. Special care has been recommended for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions.
Doctors have reiterated that while COVID-19 has not disappeared, it continues to show seasonal patterns with periodic spikes. Early detection, responsible behaviour, and preventive measures remain key to limiting the spread in the city.
